The father of Dancehall artiste Ebony, Nana Poku Kwarteng has paid tribute to his late daughter, describing her as a splendid, one-of-kind talent.
Nana Poku, who last spoke to Ebony on Wednesday, learned of the passing of his 20-year-old daughter in a car accident at Mankranso in the Ashanti Region around 4:00 am this morning.
“If I should describe my girl, I’ll say she was amazing, splendid, so unique. Ghana is going to find it tough to find someone like this pretty queen,” he said to Citi News‘ Kwame Dadzie.
Nana Poku recalled his support for Ebony’s music career despite the criticism that came her way for her salacious persona and fashion sense.
“I have always supported this queen, that was her talent. She had nothing to lose. I supported her all the time. I have always supported my queen… she had it all. Honestly, she did.”
Ebony, whose real name is Priscilla Opoku-Kwarteng, was returning from Sunyani after visiting her mother when the Jeep she was travelling in crashed into a VIP bus on Thursday evening, according to police.
Ebony was travelling with three other people, two of whom have also been confirmed dead.
The driver of the Jeep survived the crash, but most recent reports indicate that he is still unconscious and receiving treatment.
On his daughter’s trip to Sunyani, Nana Poku noted that “she [Ebony] said she was going to see her mom. Her mom had returned from the UK and she needed to her. I said okay and that was it.”
He is yet to speak to any family at Sunyani and he indicated that he was not in the right state of mind to even pick phone calls.
“…My mood would not permit me to do so [pick up phone calls]. I have someone here who responds to any call I receive.”
Ebony’s death: MUSIGA demands dualization of intercity highways
The Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) is demanding the dualization of major intercity highways in the country.
The president of the Union, Bice Osei Kuffuor, also known as Obuor, in an interaction with the press at the 1-week memorial of late dancehall musician, Ebony said the failure of successive governments to dualize major highways has resulted in several preventable deaths.
He said it was about time something urgent is done about the situation and the Union will embark on a massive campaign to demand action in that regard.
He bemoaned the increasing spate of road accidents resulting in the death of many Ghanaians.
Obuor told the press that, “when Ebony died, she didn’t just die, it calls for a revolution for us to make a movement towards solving this problem of road carnages. Ghana must welcome us. We will be coming to the districts, regions, cities to solicit for public consensus because it is about time that Ghana as a country has dual carriage roads across all regions. And that is something that we want Ebony’s [death] to be remembered for.
He said MUSIGA will champion the campaign through important collaborations with governmental and arts bodies including the GHAMRO to ensure that road carnages are significantly reduced.
Ebony, born, Priscilla Opoku Kwarteng died in a road accident on February 8, 2018 when a jeep she was travelling in skidded off its lane and ran into a VIP bus at Mankraso in the Ashanti Region.
Her death brings to memory other similar events involving celebrities such as Suzzy Williams, Terry Bonchaka, Kwame Owusu-Ansah and Vybrant Faya.
Meanwhile, the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Catherine Abelema Afeku, has said her Ministry will embark on a road safety awareness campaign to ensure sanity on the roads to save more lives.
Speaking at Ebony’s one-week memorial service on Sunday, she charged players in the entertainment industry to take the lead in road safety campaigns.
“This is a rallying call for the musicians, the artistes of Ghana to come together and to make a bold statement on road safety on the lives of the precious talent and creative citizens of this country, and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture will support you,” she said.
Madonna: My Son Will Be Malawi President
Pop star Madonna has called her son, David Banda, “the future president of Malawi” in a tweet praising the 12-year-old.
The US singer has six children, four of whom she adopted from Malawi.
The singer has reportedly had a fractious relationship with Malawi’s authorities.
In 2013, Malawi accused Madonna of “bullying state officials”, exaggerating her contribution to the country and demanding VIP treatment.
Madonna’s manager accused Malawi’s government of having a “grudge” against the singer’s charity, Raising Malawi, which she founded the same year she adopted David.
Last year, Malawi granted Madonna permission to adopt two more children, and she became mother to twin baby girls Esther and Stella Mwale.
